Last Day of School

Well we couldn't finish the year off with any typical day! We decided to have a fabulous and fun beach party! It was so busy with packing away our goods, finishing projects, playing outside and watching movies that I didn't even have time to realize that is truly was the last day. I am glad we ended the year with such excitement, joy and fun, yet I am so sad to say goodbye to this group. This group surprised me in more ways than one - they are all reading books, they all know the elements of reciprocal teaching by heart, each student was benchmarked in our DIBELS, all of them met their NWEA goals, they successfully did the daily 5, they can all write multiple sentences, most of them can tie their shoes, and they all seemed to enjoy singing our daily songs and stating the husky pride pledge. They were awesome, and I couldn't be more proud! Thank you to all my 2010-2011 rangers. You'll always be in my heart!

I Won't Complain, I won't Complain...

Okay...so we have been seriously complaining about the cold, yucky miserable weather for far too long. So what does mother nature do? Yup, the last week of school she decides to give us what we asked for - in the most extreme way possible. Now I am not one to complain, but seriously, our classroom is in the back of the dome, as far away from the AC as you can get in this school. So we have been...well...miserably hot this week! We been putting our water bottles in the freezer and washing our faces with cold water every bathroom break to help beat the heat. But during brain break today, we somehow found some relaxation. We turned the lights down low, grabbed some cold napkins, turned on some soft tunes, put our heads back and just relaxed. Now kindergarten isn't usually the most relaxing of grade levels - its happy, its energetic, its playful, and its awesome - but relaxation is a rarity. So we are happy to say we found a little bliss in our hot, hot days. 

Beetles, Birds, and Bugs...Oh My!

We have been learning about bugs, birds, fish, and various animals in science. So we decided to learn about which of these animals are in our community, even right outside our classroom door! So we ventured outside with our clipboards, pencils, and ranger hats and began exploring! After only 15 minutes of searching we found 1 neighbor's pet, 5 spiders, 6 beetles, 24 ants, and way too many birds to count! It was so fun watching them explore and discover new creatures around us! At first no one wanted to even get close to the first spider I discovered and by the end they were waiting in line to feel it crawl up their arm! Check out our future scientists!

Eat a Cupcake, With Your Cupcake!

We all know how important mothers are in our lives. So the Rangers wanted to take a day to bring all their mothers in for a class luncheon. We spent a good portion of our morning preparing for our moms. We cleaned our classroom, we decorated our tables, and we practiced our performance. Yes, we even had a performance! 

As our moms came in, each of the Rangers faces lit up. And what a wonderful, and quite cozy, turnout we had! We had classical music playing while the moms and students ate, talked, and learned a little about what we do in the classroom. After we were done eating we passed out some flower pot cupcakes. Miss Mahoney and I spent our Mothers Day night cooking away, only to  discover some "wilted" pretzel stems in the morning. Luckily, Miss Mahoney was able to pick us up a new bag of pretzels, and those flowers perked right back up!

After our bellies we full, the Rangers snuck out of the room to get ready for their show. We performed one poem and handed out our forever boquets. 

 Dear Mom,
I will love you forever;
And forever you will be
The most wonderful mother,
You mean everything to me.

I thought of buying you flowers
In the usual way,
But I knew you would prefer
A FOREVER bouquet!

And then we sang three songs about our fabulous moms! We hope you enjoyed the show and please know that appreciate ALL that you do!

You didn't really think I would let the royal wedding pass us by without a celebration did you!? To celebrate the royal event we made jeweled crowns, sipped on tea (apple juice) and crumpets (sugar cookies)! We learned all about the royals, their new titles as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, what their duties will be and what we would do as a prince and princess. We had a lot of dressing up at kid time and I couldn't help but snap a few photos! Here's to all of us finding our own inner prince and princess!

Hoppy Spring

Thursday was a fun-filled day with crafting our own Easter baskets, celebrating 2 birthdays and going on one massive easter egg hunt. Miss Mahoney and I spent our prep period hiding 63 eggs out on our school grounds! Why 63 to be exact? Well in the Rainforest room we have been talking a lot about sharing, playing fair, and treating each other with respect. So we thought if we were going to do an egg hunt, it would need to be fair and the students would need to share. 

So here were the rules: 

1. A student can only pick up an egg they find if it matches their first or last name. 

2. If they find an egg that doesn't belong to them, they are to gently put it back, so that the rightful owner can hunt for it. 

3. Each student was allowed to find one fun shaped egg to keep for themselves. 

Altogether, each student was responsible for finding 3 eggs and with a little teamwork we ended up finding ALL 63 eggs! It worked out beautifully, because everyone ended up with the same number of eggs and it took a little more time to hunt! When we got back into the classroom we enjoyed some tasty birthday treats from Autumn and we created a unique spring bunny to add to our scrapbook!  

We know we had a hoppy spring day and we hope you all did as well!
